Job Title:  Software Development Consultant

Salary:  To be Discussed (depending on experience, up to £30,000 maximum per year with a minimum of 32 hours per week during a minimum of 44 weeks per year)

Period:  22th October 2018 – 30th of September 2019 (with option to renew until 2021)

Reporting To:  Professor Juan Carlos Augusto  (Principal Investigator of Research Project on Gamification) and also to a designated representative from GLL


Role Summary

This post is related to a technical collaboration between Middlesex University London and GLL.  The aim of the collaboration is to explore whether technology can help encouraging citizens to increase their involvement in healthy physical activities.  These activities can go beyond sports and gym exercise.  More specifically we will explore in depth during a three years partnership the potential of gamification strategies.   This project will generate new knowledge and develop new technological solutions.  The Software Development Consultant in this post will have an important role in leading stakeholder engagement activities as well as implementing part of the technological solutions.


Job Purpose

The applicant will be contributing to three important dimensions of the project: Mass Engagement, User Retention, and Inactive Citizens.  For each of these the candidate will lead on stakeholder engagement activities, and on the development of technological solutions.

The overall project planned to last for three years. This post is in principle for one year and renewable on a yearly basis.  During each year the candidate has to lead stakeholder engagement activities exploring all three areas (Mass Engagement, User Retention, and Inactive Citizens) and develop a technological solution for one of them (each year in a different area of those three) to be agreed in advance.

Although not necessarily all technological solutions in the project will be based on mobile phone technology there is an expectation most of them will be hence a candidate with experience in developing for mobile technology is expected.


Main responsibilities:

Research and knowledge transfer

  • Contribute to applications for increasing the available research and knowledge transfer funding associated with this project
  • Individually or with others, contribute to the project using a range of stakeholder engagement methodologies, helping with the organization of these events and when required leading them
  • To undertake literature reviews and contribute to the production of research reports, and if needed their publication.
  • To liaise with project and programme partners internally and externally to support the delivery of the project
  • Continually update own knowledge in the field of specialism


  • Support the Lead Researcher with the coordination of activities
  • Provide administrative support to the project to include but not limited to note taking, organisation of events and dissemination of information to stakeholders

 Learning and Teaching

  • Contribute to occasional teaching activities through demonstration of equipment and explanation of research methods and equipment to students



 Post Title:                   Software Development Consultant

Essential Criteria: 

  • A first degree in a Computer Science discipline, with honours and with at least an upper second class classification and Masters level in employment-related discipline
  • Proven ability to produce research reports
  • Experience implementing software for mobile platforms
  • Demonstrable evidence of effective communication (verbal and written) with a wide range of people including external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative and to be able to manage workload effectively
  • Evidence of working in a team environment

Desirable Criteria:

  • Familiarity with current trends in “Internet of Things”
  • Experience with both Android and iOS platforms
  • Experience of successful completion of similar projects
